After having last season completely cancelled due to COVID-19, the Warren Central baseball players are ready to get back on the diamond. The Warriors have been working hard during the offseason to prepare for all of the upcoming competitions.

“I’m looking forward to getting the guys back on the field. We missed out on that last year. It was very difficult for [the players]. I think it affected them mentally, socially, so the main thing is just getting back out there, mixing it up, and going at it to see what we can do,” head coach Emmitt Carney said.

The seniors on the team are getting excited for the season to start because they do not want their season to go away as it did last year. The team has been putting in a lot of work to help the seniors reach their goals.

“We have a group of guys that all get along really well and play together great,” senior Gavin DeBerry said.

The Warriors are a very young team this year, with only two players that have played on varsity. The players are hoping that all the players on the team, young and old, can come together and have a good season.

“We are definitely a young team, but we've put in good work and we just have to trust that and go into the season swinging,” DeBerry said.

The team is hoping to win their first sectional championship since 1991 this year. The whole team is practicing many times a week to help the team reach this goal.

“Goals for the team is to win county and sectionals,” senior Collin Echols said.

As far as COVID-19 goes, the team has been masking up whenever possible in and out of practice. The team is hoping that COVID-19 does not affect the season very much.

“I think that since we’re an outdoor sport, I think it will still have its effect but I think it will be lessened with all the safety precautions that we’re taking with social distancing even in the dugout and wearing our masks, and just being diligent about doing the small things we need to do to participate during this time of trouble,” Carney said.

Overall, the team is looking to make an impact on the baseball history of Warren, and do something big.

“The main goal is just to show up, just play hard, be disciplined, be a good student and person on and off the field,” Carney said.
