Indy Celebrates Irish Heritage

Friday, March 15, 2019

Many remember celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in elementary school as either wearing green or getting pinched in consequence for not participating. Outside of the obvious ways to observe the holiday such as wearing green or drinking a shamrock shake, Warriors can also celebrate the holiday by attending events happening locally in Indianapolis.

This year for St. Patrick’s Day, Indianapolis decided to commemorate the Irish missionary in a three day celebration, from Thursday through Saturday. On Thursday, March 14, the 23 Annual Hoosier Lottery Greening of the canal brought Hoosiers together to experience the dyeing of the canal with live music, dancing and appearances from local celebrities. This free event began at 5 p.m on the downtown canal near Ohio and West. For anyone who missed it, though, this was merely the beginning of the celebration.

Early Friday morning, Indianapolis will kick off the 39th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which is also presented by Hoosier Lottery. Over 10,000 are expected to view the parade at 11:30 a.m on North and Pennsylvania. The parade will be in full effect with high school bands, floats, appearances from local celebrities, Irish dancers and musical entertainers. There will also be a Parade Tent Party that will feature lottery giveaways and live music from various artists such as a Beautiful Day and Highland Reign. This event will take place at 9 a.m and will end at 3 p.m.

Tomorrow, on March 15, the Athletic Club Foundation will host the 28th Annual Shamrock Run & Walk. The walk will begin on 748 Massachusetts Avenue at 10 a.m and end at 5 p.m.

This is the official race of the St. Patrick’s Day parade and is one of the Foundation’s largest fundraisers of the year. The top male and female runners will be rewarded at the end of the event. This year, the foundation will partner with the Indianapolis Fire Department and others on Mass Avenue in downtown Indianapolis to benefit local charities. For those interested in the event, there is online registration.
