Toronto Plane Crash

Over the past month and a half, there have been numerous plane crashes across North America, some more devastating than others. This sudden increase in plane crashes has caused concern among many people, especially with spring break coming up. In total, there have been five major crashes in 2025.

The first crash occurred on Jan. 29 in Washington D.C. and was by far the most devastating. In this crash, an American Airlines jet collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter. The American Airlines flight was carrying 64 passengers and the helicopter had three people inside. After the collision, it was determined that there were no survivors, resulting in a total of 67 people being killed.

The second crash occurred only two days after the first on Jan. 31 in Philadelphia. A small medical jet, which was carrying six passengers, one of which was a child patient, crashed into a Philadelphia neighborhood. All six people in the plane passed away along with one other person who was driving in the neighborhood when the plane hit. The child was being treated for a life-threatening condition and was headed back to Mexico where the passengers were from.

The third plane crash was in Alaska and occurred on Feb. 6. This crash was a Cessna 208B, a small passenger plane that was carrying 10 people. The flight’s original plan was to leave the village of Unalakleet and reach the town of Nome, but after losing speed and altitude the plane went down. There were no survivors.

The fourth plane crash occurred on Feb. 10 in Arizona and occurred when two private jets collided with one another at the Scottsdale Airport. One person was killed and four others were injured.

The fifth and most recent crash occurred in Toronto on Feb. 17. In this crash a Delta plane overturned and crashed during its landing procedures. No one was killed but at least 18 passengers had to be taken to the hospital.

This begs the question of why all of these issues are occurring seemingly all at once. Plane crashes themselves are somewhat of a rare occurrence with air travel statistically being very safe. In 2024 there were roughly 38.7 million flights throughout the year and only about 1,500 of them crashed.

With spring break coming up very soon many Warriors will most likely be going on vacation somewhere, potentially by plane. This sudden surge in crashes has raised concern for some who plan to fly in the coming weeks.

“The only thing we have been seeing on the news recently is plane crash after plane crash,” senior Isis Webster said. “It's very concerning that our safety is at risk for a multitude of reasons.”

It is also worth mentioning that three out of the five major crashes all occurred at an airport. The Indianapolis Airport is not too far from Warren Central.

With all of these crashes, much concern has now risen around planes and air travel in general, so many hope that as the year continues the number of crashes will decrease along with the concern surrounding them.
