Diving deeper into the real-life case files of renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, the couple is taking on the case that would be their last in “The Conjuring: Last Rites.”
From trailers and everything revealed about “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” it seems like it’ll be worth watching for anyone who likes the paranormal. This is a very well-established franchise for viewers looking for a good scare.
The movie is set in the year 1986 in Pennsylvania and is based on the true story of the Smurl family haunting. The events that are usually depicted in the “Conjuring” movies are dramatized for entertainment value. However, the New England Society for Psychic Research (NESPR), which houses the Warren's most infamous case files in the Smurls’ case, stated, “Initially, the episodes were benign.” It began with tools going missing and then reappearing and fresh coats of paint peeling and the old wall showing through. Then it intensified with a light fixture falling from the ceiling, which cut one of the daughters on impact.
According to the official trailer of “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” the demon that the Warrens are facing is actually the first demon they ever faced when they were young investigators. This movie will be the last iteration in the mainline “Conjuring” universe, finally bringing an end to a 10-movie-long series that began in 2013.
Throughout the years, the four mainline “Conjuring” films have had two different directors. For the first two mainline movies, the director was James Wan, who also directed “Insidious” and “Malignant.” In more recent years, the movies have been directed by Michael Chaves, who also directed the sequel to “The Nun” from 2023 and “The Curse of La Llorona” from 2019.
Throughout the years of the franchise, the Warrens were able to handle themselves and were willing to take the risks that would come with the cases they investigated, but unfortunately for the Warrens during the events of “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” Ed suffered from a heart attack due to a paranormal attack during the exorcism of David Glatzel and was hospitalized, which further slowed their investigation and also caused greater concern for Ed’s health.
Anyone looking for a good scare can find it in this well-established series in the horror genre. “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” which incorporates aspects of the paranormal and a form of religious horror, releases in theaters on Sept. 5 and will likely later be available for streaming on STARZ or Peacock.
